GSG Summit Webinar Series: Non-Linear Garden Design as an Identity Affirming Garden Practice

When:  Mar 15, 2023 from 11:00:00 AM to 12:00:00 PM (PT)
This webinar series is presented by the School Garden Support Organization Network.

Bring the learnings of the April 2022 Growing School Gardens Summit home with this six month webinar series, featuring a variety of presentations from the Summit.

From the chinampas of Mexico, to the terraced gardens in Asia & companion planting practices around the world, our ancestors point the way to designs that circumvent tidy row cropping most common in gardens. By exploring nonlinear designs we can re-center the practices of ancestral growers and invite conversations about identity and heritage into our garden programs. Join us for a workshop that engages the senses as we journey towards collective care and common ground in our school gardens. Participants will roam displays of culturally significant crops, share their personal connection to these crops and collaboratively build a colorful poster display of culturally affirming garden themes that align with Common Core Standards to bring back to their schools. We are a team of educators and sustainability leaders from the west coast and the midwest who blend a unique, student centered, multicultural and nature based pedagogical practice. We will share our most successful examples of fully integrated garden learning, including the founding of a seed bank by Lukas, age 14. You will take away inspiration and concrete strategies for culturally affirming garden education to scale or translate in any garden program.
