    I have this amazing drought tolerant space that is filled with black ants.  i took students out last week to do a bit of weeding and as the weeds they pulled we covered in ants at the roots.  Next thing I know we have ants on our shoes and climbing up our pants!  No one was bitten thankfully.  Any ideas of how I can handle the ant problem in a non-toxic, earth friendly way?  The space is quite lovely and children like to hang out there during recess.  I want to make sure it's clean and safe for them.

    This may not be feasible, but it does work on the fire ants we have in the South. Do this on a Friday afternoon, so it has time to take effect before the following school week.   Boil a bunch of powdered cayenne pepper in water, then pour it over the mound while it's still hot. Around the plants themselves try just the powdered cayenne.  It won't hurt the plants.
