I am an Extension Professional and plan to attend local Farmer's Markets this summer and share produce basics and recipe ideas and resources with families.
I would like to include something for children to engage in.
Does anyone have any ideas that I could share with children at the Farmer's Market over the summer and into the fall?

    Hi Deb,

I am a volunteer with Monarchs Across Georgia and we do a lot with kids in set ups like farmers markets.
A quick and easy are coloring pages -- feel free to print off pages from our coloring book:
    https://www.eealliance.org/uploads/1/2/9/7/129730705/mag_coloring_book.pdf
    or from our Pollinators Guide:
If you wanted to do an easy craft with them and have pencils with the extension office info on it -- take 3 chenille stems (1 white, one yellow and 1 black) and have the kids wind them together around the pencil -- make sure the stems are next to one another and not overtop of one another.  They can slide it off and onto a green (leaf) chenille stem.  They've made a monarch caterpillar on a leaf that can be wrapped around their wrist as a bracelet.  This is similar to the activity:  https://preschooltoolkit.com/blog/fuzzy-caterpillar-craft-for-kids/

Another easy, but messy activity for kids is a windowsill 3 sisters garden.  Take Dixie cups filled 3/4 with soil, have the kids add 1 corn, 1 bean, and 1 squash seed, squirt in 2 pipettes of water, cover cup with Glad Press N'Seal food wrap.  When it sprouts they can transfer it to a real pot.

Hello Deb!  I am Lecturer at SDSU and participate in many events on campus and at my local Community Garden.  A fun twist on the seed planting activity, which is so hands on and might encourage planting at home, is to have a few empty clean cans on hands with newspaper - demonstrate for the children how to roll the newspaper around the can and "seal" the bottom, then add the dirt and seeds.  Then, when they get home, they can just drop the newspaper container into the dirt -as the newspaper is compostable!
