Subject: What to do...alternate activities while kids are cooking?
Sean: Thanks for confirming I am on the right track. Can you share with me the Taste Test Tips? I put together a taste test form to the kids to check off and it worked OK but I know it could be more engaging. I am working with about 20 teenagers, we have 1 to 1 and a half hours together.
This season as the funding for the classes did not come through for the boys and girls club our Community Kitchen is doing on our end with limited funds and it is about 12 kids per class and they are not always the same kids and twens and teenagers. Outside the formal school network, I don't yet have contacts within the school system. Also, our Winter garden was harvested and our Spring garden was just planted so I don't have the ability to go to the garden with them yet to pull produce to cook. We also have a very special demo kitchen, kids garden and farm. I am scrambling to find all the connections I can (one of these this organization)
Any and all resources you can give me is appreciated. I was a Volunteer at these classes for over a year but being on staff part time and being responsible for cirriculum is completely new for me These are truly great kids and I want to make these classes informative for them and really help them explore some healthy eating.
Best from beatiful North Georgia!

Here are a couple of taste test and nutrition education ideas that might work while some students are finishing prepping food:

Hi Pamela! Ditto and great question - replies offered already gave me some more ideas. Just saying - I have 12 Tweens and Teens in a Boy's Girls Club Cooking Class. While some of the kids were cooking last session, I introduced taste testing and it kept the balance of the group busy in discussion during periods their group was done with prep-work, and before group clean up. This is a very opinionated age group and tasting involves all senses. After everything was cooked, we ate together and taste tested and filled out taste test forms. Next session we will see how the results go.

I have had some great fun with my garden club and other classes cooking in the outdoor classroom this fall. We have made several of the recipes that have been listed through these networks... so thanks for sharing.
I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for me. It seems most of the time there are "jobs" for everyone with the recipes I choose but grating a zucchini and measuring/dumping a teaspoon of salt are much different. I don't have the extra materials, ability or space to have several small groups all making the entire recipe. What other activities do you do when students are finished with their one step of a multi-step recipe? I try to have them all paying attention to the others but sometimes I have wandering kids... Simple garden/kitchen related activities that won't need a lot of supervision?
Thanks so much!
Pam
