  • 1.  Adaptive garden tools? Sourcing Q

    Posted 10-14-2023 12:39:00 PM

Hi all, do you know of sources for adaptive garden tools? Shovels, rakes, cultivators that kids with a variety of different mobility needs could use. Including shorter metal / wooden shovels that elementary kids can use instead of the full adult size ones, but not as small as the hand held ones. Looking for more specific than "Amazon." Thank you so much for any help on this. -Allie, Washington, D.C.

I have always liked the product from Hearthsong, they are expensive but last. I bought my daughter a garden implement set 30 years ago and it was passed on to many children in our extended family.  April 2023, I was in our local Walmart and picked up 3 shovels, 3 flat rakes and 3 leaf rakes, all kids sized, for my three granddaughters ages 2, 5, and 7 for about 5.99 - 7.99 each. Metal tool with wooden handle. My son in law added hockey tape to the handles as they were a little rough.

Don't get plastic implements with wooden handles, they won't last. If you get plastic make sure it is one piece molded and very heavy duty, this is better for the short hand tools.

    Hi Allie!

I'm not sure if these are the right sizes you are looking for, but I've purchased ergonomic hand tools from Radius (bought at Home Depot) before for adaptive gardening classes. I would also look at Peta for their long reach garden tools set and add-on handles. Happy to talk about this more! You can reach me at marla.guggenheimer@gwrymca.org.

    Best,

    Marla
