    Hello Everyone,

As part of my work the DCD requires I take courses that provide CE credits each year. I work with 3-13 year olds as the Garden Coordinator at a Montessori School. Do you have any suggestions or experiences that you recommend? Or resources for finding courses relating to my work that provide these certifications?

    Many thanks for your help,

    Dorian

    Hi Dorian -

I know that requirements around what counts for continuing education credit can vary greatly from state to state, but here are a few opportunities that provide the option of signing up for graduate credit if that would work for you:

    Teaching in Nature's Classroom: https://wischoolgardens.org/tnc-cours

School Garden Coordinator Certificate Training: https://workspace.oregonstate.edu/certificate/school-garden-coordinator-certificate-training

Life-Lab Certified School Garden Educator Program: https://www.lifelab.org/educator-certification-program

At KidsGardening, we offer a few courses and we can provide a certificate of completion, however we do not offer official CE credits.  A list of our courses can be found at: https://kidsgardening.getlearnworlds.com/home

I can second the recommendation for Teaching in Nature's Classroom, and look forward to checking out the others recommended too.

Also, I can recommend programming provided by the Plant for Human Health Institute, a part of the NC State Extension Program.  Among other programs, they offer a class Building Gardens, Building Minds for which you can get CEU.  The fall session is already well underway, but you might still contact them and see if it will be offered again in the spring.

You could also check with your local extension to see if there are classes available that might be applicable.

And finally, you could check Junior Master Gardener curriculum.

    Good luck!

    Hi Dorian,

I concur with the others. Teaching in Nature's Classroom is wonderful. Our district has many teachers who have taken it. Our organization, Get2Green, has modeled much of our district specific training on this model.

    Good luck!

    Hi Dorian,

Many teachers in our district have taken Nathan Larson's Teaching in Nature's Classroom. The online course begins in January, and you can receive graduate-level professional development credit for $160. Otherwise, the course is free. You can also download a free version of the book, Teaching in Natures Classroom. It's a beautifully illustrate resource.

    Good luck!
