  • 1.  Dimensions for garden bed to accommodate 8 students

    Posted 03-24-2024 11:27:00 AM

We are building garden beds for kids , 3 feet wide. How long do I need to make each side if I want to have 8 students actively gardening at the same time?

    All advice is appreciated. Thanks

I'd think you would want them to be at least 8 feet long? Maybe more depending on how old the students are and what tools you expect them to be using.

    Hi Shirley!

If you could get a bed that is 3' X 6' long then each student could have their own square foot garden.

(well actually they would be 1.5 ' X 1.5' - so a little bit of extra space in between).  Kids really like having the opportunity to plan and cultivate their own little spot.

How active they will be in the space will depend a lot on what you have planted and how much care the plants need (are you hoping they will harvest, weed, water?) and how often you visit.  If you want to have a lot to do on a regular basis, you may want to determine the length based on space available and resources for building the beds.

Sarah,  thanks for the information. I like the ideas of each student having their own square space to plant in. We will visit the garden once a week all summer, and plant, care for, weed, and harvest.
