  • 1.  Recommendations for rain gear and science kits?

    Posted 03-17-2023 09:43:00 AM

    Hi all,

Happy almost spring! A school I work with is interested in using grant money to purchase a classroom set of rain gear (boots and coats.) Does anyone have recommendations for a reasonably priced set of these?

They are also interested in purchasing items like butterfly nets, bug boxes, etc. for science-based lessons in the garden. If you have any ideas, please let me know!

    Thanks,

    Erica

    Hi Erica,

I would advise against anything clothing that might possibly be shared. #1 sizes, #2 lice/foot fungus. Have the parents send them from home.

Acorn Naturalists has a lot of the items like nets and such.
But, please, reconsider catching butterflies as it DOES damage their wings.  The wings are comprised of microscopic scales that are easily rubbed off in handling, rendering it difficult or impossible for the butterfly to fly.

Erica, For science based school products, try Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley. They are a non-profit hands-on science museum/learning center for kids and adults. THey are not the cheapest but sell high quality products through their on-line store.
