Hi! I know there are tons of printables out there (worksheets, activities, etc.) so what are some of your favorites for kids to do?

Share a favorite printable (or more than one)! Or create your own and share it here! (Plus, that could be your "Try Something New" challenge activity if you haven't done that before.) Please only share printables that you have permission to share and/or share links if they need to be purchased.

Note: This is part of the Kids Garden Month Challenge and everyone who responds will be entered to win prizes!

All of the details about Kids Garden Month, the different challenges you can participate in, and the prizes (including a garden bed from Vita!) are on this page.

Here is a resource I made for our Garden Kickoff event at school! This "Nature Scavenger Hunt" was one of the stations families could participate in around our campus/playground as we took turns scooping soil into our raised garden beds.

I made this scavenger hunt a couple years ago and laminated it so they could be written on with expo markers and reused. Some letters are obviously more difficult than others, but I encourage the kids to get creative :)

The Phillips Free Library is one of the local libraries here. A free seed cabinet, is a cabinet made out of plastic, word, or even an old card catalog cabinet that had free seed packets in it and is labeled with what types of seeds are in it for families to come take a few packets home with them to plant.

I would like to share a story for preschoolers that helped them to understand fruit crops and root crops.

I brought 2 stuffed animals and we had a role play of "Tops and bottoms". In it a lazy bear is outsmarted by Hare. Hare offers the bear a choice of the tops or the bottoms of vegetables he will grow, in exchange for using the bear's land. The first year the Bear chooses to have the tops, so the Hare plants radishes. Next year the Bear feels upset, so chooses to have the bottoms. The Hare plants tomatoes and gets all the crops himself again! In the end, the bear learns he must plant his own crops if he is to get ahead in the world. This was engaging activity. As the vegetables were "growing" we colored the pages, kids helped to choose the right colors for the crayons. After that I would use scissors and cut-split the parts of the "vegetables" between the Bear and the Hare. The children were emotionally involved especially when the Bear tasted his part of vegetable and disliked it!

    Enjoy!

This is a version of our Sunflower Garden "take & make" - use a paper lunch bag, a cup with a hole for drainage, a coffee filter (optional), a baggie of potting soil, and 4 or 5 sunflower seed!

I use this on the first day of every class and it allows youth and grown ups to get out of their labels and think about what they would like. It's interesting that no one ever chooses their own real first name.

Hi! I created a simple chart for tracking the growth of our scallions that we plant in recycled milk cartons. The students put popsicle sticks with their student numbers in the cartons and they measure the plants each morning before we start class. I added some clip art for our specific plants to the top and had my bookkeeper print it poster size. You may need to adjust fonts since I uploaded as a docx so that it would be editable.

Hi all! I created free alphabet sound cards based on garden keywords (almost all garden vegetables or fruits). This printable is essentially black and white drawings and can be colored by children for early literacy lessons in the garden.

    Cranberries: Nature's Little Powerhouses

Cranberries are small, tart berries that grow on low-lying vines in sandy bogs and marshes. Below you can learn about where it is native, which states produces most cranberries and also a little fun fact about the origin of the name.  Here is a printable color-by-number that can inspire talking with kids about native berries, their importance in crop production, sustainable ways to produce/harvest cranberries nowadays.

Image of the head and neck of a crane and the flower of the cranberry plant

    Fun Facts:

    • Native to North America: Cranberries have been grown and enjoyed by Native Americans for centuries.
    • What states produce cranberries?  Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington. Together they harvest more than 7 million barrels of cranberries each fall (One barrel = 100 pounds).
    • Do you know which is the leading cranberry-producing state in the U.S?  That would be Wisconsin, accounting for over half of the nation's total cranberry output!
    • About the name of this berry:  early settlers gave cranberry its modern name.  To them, the pink cranberry blossoms resembled the heads of the cranes.  Initially called "craneberry" it later transformed to "cranberry"
    • Health Benefits: They're rich in vitamins C and E, antioxidants, and fiber, which help boost the immune system and promote overall health. Attention, most of the time we eat cranberries with sugar.  Consider the balance of adding vitamins and antioxidants as well as carbs to our diet

    Enjoy the learning and coloring!
