Hi! As we approach the end of our growing season here in Denver, CO (zone 5b/6a), I am reflecting on all of the joy that my children and I got out of our newly built cattle panel arch and raised beds we grew in this year. Among all that we planted were scarlet runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus.) Scarlet runner beans are a fantastic addition to any family garden. With their nutritional benefits, ease of growth, and ability to attract pollinators, these vibrant plants provide numerous advantages for families. Here are five reasons to consider planting scarlet runner beans next season and enjoy the many rewards they bring to your garden and your table!

    1. Nutritional Powerhouse
Scarlet runner beans are packed with essential nutrients. They are rich in protein, fiber, and various vitamins, including B vitamins and vitamin C.

    2. Ease of Growth
These beans thrive in a variety of soil types and are relatively low-maintenance. They prefer sunny spots and can be directly sown into the ground after the last frost. With a bit of water and care, they can produce a bountiful harvest.

    3. Pollinators Love Them
The vibrant red flowers of scarlet runner beans are not just beautiful; they attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to your garden. This not only helps the beans but also supports the overall ecosystem, promoting a healthy garden environment.

    4. Space-Saving Vertical Growth
Scarlet runner beans are climbers, making them ideal for small gardens or urban spaces. They can be grown on trellises or fences, maximizing vertical space while providing a lush green backdrop and with a pop from their colorful blooms. They add a lovely texture and flavor to salads, stews, and stir-fries, making them a versatile addition to any meal.

    5. Delicious and Versatile
The beans can be enjoyed fresh, dried, or cooked in a variety of dishes. The scarlet red flowers are edible and have a delicious, sweet bean flavor, and the dried beans have a gorgeous speckled purple coloring to them that kids find fascinating!

Scarlet runner beans are not only a feast for the eyes with their striking red flowers, but they also offer numerous benefits for families looking to enhance their gardens and diets. I hope you found some compelling reasons to consider planting these vibrant beans!
