Hello! My students want to make a community garden at the front of our school. Would anyone happen to have any tips or ideas about how to do this successfully? They have mentioned wanting people to be able to pick straight from the garden, and they could help us keep it weeded (especially during the summer). Or we could put the garden somewhere else and have a fresh produce stand of some sort set up on the weekend? This is still a very new idea so any and all tips/ideas are welcome!

    Hi!

Sounds like fun. Can you send a picture of the space you have? I would suggest some kind of raised bed(s).

Do you have anything in your area like Craigslist Free? or Ask, Borrow, Give. I have found some great raised beds for free from those places.

I would love to know more!

Hi Kristen. We started our school garden in 2015. It is right out front so everyone can see it when they come to the school. It has a ton of sun and is great to spark interest within our community. During the summer I set up a signup genius and send it to all the families asking if anyone wants to volunteer for a day or two weeding, harvesting, watering. I set up a few days a week and then the summer school program or myself fill in the days that no one is around. It has worked out beautifully. The kids love it and start the seeds in the spring and then go plant them outside when they are ready. During the school year we go out and harvest vegetables, fruit and herbs and bring them to our school cafeteria. Kids have tried so many more vegetable b/c of this it is amazing. The parents don't believe it. If you have any questions let me know. Oh this year our local girl scouts are coming in to do a rain barrel and to try soaker hoses.
