Growing School Food Gardens

Hi all -

I am doing a class on habitat and am curious if folks have a go to really easy bird "feeder" making project - no nut butter, not messh, doable with 20 kids (did I mention easy? lol) I will have them fill bird seed trays and maybe fill trays of water, but need something else hands on for the 30 min class. Open as well to non-feeder habitat

Hi!  I use TP rolls with string. Hole punch and thread string or yarn through. Tie in a knot. Roll in vegetable shortening and then bird seed. Stick in zip lock baggies. Easy Peasy!

Hi Cathy,

When talking about habitat, I discussed with my students what else animals need besides food. We then talked about safe place, water, nesting... The students started piling twigs and little branches in a corner of the garden area and looked for little holes in vegetation that can serve as places for solitary bees to put their eggs. I know it is cold in your area, but maybe a walk through the garden can create ideas, especially when old plant material still exists.
