  • 1.  Farm-based summer camp programming

    Hello!

    Does anyone have experience designing and implementing farm-based summer camp programming for school-aged kids? Would love to hear how you went about planning it, setting it up, logistics, costs, and how you run your summer camp program. Thanks!

    Erica,

    We organized one, but didn't follow through because of the COVID shutdown.  It was to be a day camp, run in conjunction with summer school.  The high school provided the classroom in the morning and bus in the afternoon.  Trips were organized to various entities in the area--a honey bee farm, an urban farm, a donation garden, a grocery store (to discuss produce layout), a feed store, etc.  Financial donations were provided by local businesses, and a grocery store was to donate food.  We were going to utilize the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for education.  This is a great idea, and I'm sure you can think of similar opportunities in your area.  The state agriculture service is always a terrific resource.  Good luck!

    How fortuitous! I was going to recommend the Moab Youth Garden Project site, and I see Erin has replied below. I discovered this gem while visiting there with my family at Christmas. I saw the garden project on a map and walked to it. I probably spent 45 minutes looking around and the same amount of time on their website. This place is really a gem with extensive programs. Please check it out. I might have to get in touch with Erin myself. :)

    I don't have any personal experience to share, but Jireh Family Farm in Durham has a summer camp.  I met the owner at a conference and she seemed like the sort of person who would talk you through all the questions you have.
