Hello, Can anyone offer tips on writing a successful grant application for a school garden? We are looking to start a vegetable/fruit tree garden, and hopefully be approved for a Kids Gardening grant next year.

    Good morning from Atlanta GA,

The advice I will give is to get a full list and budget of all of the items you will need and develop your line item budget.  Once you complete that task write to what you are going to do with the items and what the outcomes will be.  (Include student participation)

    I hope this helps.

Include lots of pictures of smiling kids working in the garden or planting seeds.  Our city of Winter Park Florida has yearly green grants and we have been very lucky to receive funds every year.

    Good luck!

One of the things that really help me when writing school garden grant is to have statistics readily available, such as the demographic of your school or the population that you intend to serve.  Create a "resume" or file of  FAQ's that are asked most often on grant application, which allows you to quickly complete application questions and then focus on the crux of your proposal or grant initiatives.  Make sure that your goals in your grant application are SMART goals and that the objectives tell exactly how you intend to meet the goals.  Makes sure that they all align with your overall vision or impact statement.  When you are thinking about how to measure the progress, makes sure that you are using tools that are accessible to you and can measure what you said in your grant application.  Create you a grant writing toolkit and book mark most frequently used websites for statistics of your area , such as county or stat numbers around food insecurity or literacy. Track outcomes and keep good records.
