Fall is finally starting to show some presence here in Florida! While we are happy for a break from the sweltering summer heat, we are also happy because it is time to start our Fall gardens. here in central Florida.  I realize though, that many gardeners are finishing up gardening for the winter. The book, Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt, by Kate Messner explores gardening through the seasons. I have created an idea sheet of some extension activities we have done with our toddler groups.  Give this book a try and please share your ideas here!

Love this, Natalie! Natalie is one of our Community Connectors with lots of experience with early childhood education. Some of our Connectors will be sharing their knowledge and experience in the Kids Garden Community through "blog-style" posts like this.

Has anyone else used this book in the garden with little ones? Are there other books you'd like to see an activity page for similar to the one Natalie has created for this book?

I love this idea.  While we have several books that we read with our students, I have never thought of connecting them to the garden by engaging in related activities.  This gives a whole new area for us to explore as we develop activities to accompany our books.

The toddlers are way more interested in the book after they had a real-life, related experience. Now they always want to read the story and find the objects in the book!!

Love this book and all of the extension ideas, Natalie! I especially love the idea to use the text and illustrations to label objects in the garden and then go on a treasure hunt to find those objects and their associated label. Such fun, cohesive learning opportunities all from one book! Thank you for sharing this!

HI Amber!  thanks for taking the time to reply. Please let me know how the activities worked   for you. The day after our first scavenger hunt the toddlers all went rushing to the spots where they found things the day before.  So smart! That's how you know they had fun! They remembered! and they wanted to do it again.  Stay tuned, I am working on a second book to share!
