Milkweed seeds

  • 1.  Milkweed seeds

    Posted 09-20-2022 11:20:00 AM
I have 30 small bags of Asclepias syriaca seeds to share. These are seeds for the Common Milkweed, which is native to the Northeast, the MidAtlantic down to North Carolina, the Midwest as far as Iowa, and the border areas of Canada.
It DOES NOT like excessively wet areas.  It is a hostplant for the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus)

So, if you are interested, please message me with the Address of your school and the Contact person.  I can ONLY send them to places where it is native.

Absolutely one of my favorite wildflowers in SW Oklahoma. We are in the direct path of the monarch butterfly migration. Our trees will be covered with them when they migrate. It's simply amazing to see! As they come to rest in the trees the other butterflies start fluttering so they don't land on them.

Hi Michelle!  We would love to have the seeds here in Northwestern NJ!
We have seen a decline in our butterfly and larva population this year due to how the summer drought affected our milkweed plants.
These seeds will be added to our pollinator garden space where we witness the life cycle of the Monarch each year.

I would love some of the milkweed seeds if they are still available. I teach World of Work at Ankeny High School Iowa. The milkweed is native to our area. I just created a student garden and am using perennials and native plants, herbs, and pollinators. We are a corridor for the monarch so this would be great.

    A. syriaca is NOT native to Oregon, so PLEASE raise it in pots and cut off the seed pods. It can be very invasive.

Awesome! We're so excited! We have 10 massive pots that we had milkweed growing in that sadly passed away this past summer due to some miscommunication with our summer school teachers. We had our Monarch Butterflies last year on their journey south and the students LOVE it! Thank you for your generosity and seeds! We were hoping to harvest seeds this year from our established plants, but that can wait till next year! We appreciate you!

    Hi Kathy,

Milkweed seeds need what is called cold stratification.  So, in Illinois you can put them in the ground in November and they will sprout in the spring.  If you want to plant them in the spring you will want to do the refrigerator stratification -- these instructions are on the seed packet. Eight weeks before you plant put the seeds on a wet paper towel in a ziploc bag in the crisper drawer of the 'fridge. SOME may sprout, that is OK. Then pot them up after 8 weeks into starter pots.
Remember, milkweed is toxic, so I don't advise having preschoolers handling the seeds or the plants.
