  • 1.  NOAA Planet Stewards Grants

    Posted 03-22-2023 08:23:00 AM

Through federal funding opportunities of up to $5,000, NOAA Planet Stewards supports formal and informal educators in carrying out hands-on stewardship projects with elementary through college-age students, as well as the general public. Stewardship projects must make a substantive and quantitatively measurable impact on an environmental issue related to the educator's community. Projects should focus on the conservation, restoration, and/or protection of human communities and/or natural resources from environmental issues in one of the following four focus areas:

    1. Marine debris
    2. Habitat conservation and restoration
    3. Carbon footprint reduction
    4. Carbon sequestration

The funding application will ask you to explain how the issue relates to your community and to connect your local issue within a broader (regional, global) context.

Once you've identified an environmental issue, think about how you can address it by engaging the resources of your school, organization, and community, and how you would measure your project's success. A successful project will make a substantive, measurable impact on the environmental issue you've identified. The impact of a Planet Stewards funded project must be quantitatively measured (e.g., acres of habitat protected or restored, tons of carbon sequestered). Educational/learning outcomes should be a part of, but not the primary measurement of the project's success.

The website indicates that the deadline for this was last year. Is this valid for submission right now?

They will offer the grant again, but it takes a while to plan a project that is grant worthy for NOAA.  They are looking at organizations that are partnering with other entities, addressing the greater goals of the grant mission, etc.
