    Hello!

What stories have specific fruits and vegetables mentioned in them like the Stone Soup story does?

Little Red Hen is one of my favorite literacy connections as children are not familiar with where flour comes from and the process of wheat from seed to plate is fascinating. The life lessons of the hard work that Little Red Hen puts in is just a great example for children who might relate to the refrain, "No, not I." when asked to help. Below are some titles to check out if you decide to do a LRH unit. You can also find my "Who Will Bake the Bread?" integrated unit for free in my Facebook group "Nature Inspired Teacher".

Galdone, Paul. The Little Red Hen

Giles, Jenny. The Little Red Hen (Readers Theater, Level I – Rigby PM Collection)

Giles, Jenny. Sly Fox and Little Red Hen (Readers Theater, Level I – Rigby PM Collection)

McQueen, Lucinda. The Little Red Hen

Messing, Debra. The Little Red Hen (with story CD)

Ottolenghi, Carol. The Little Red Hen.

Sturges, Philemon. The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza)

A few fun stories with fruits and veggies include The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has a bunch of fruits like apples, pears, and plums, and The Enormous Turnip, where the focus is on a giant turnip and teamwork to pull it out of the ground. Jack and the Beanstalk also features beans, and of course, Stone Soup is all about adding vegetables like carrots and onions to the soup. These stories are great for making learning about food both fun and engaging!

    Hi Nicole,

Theres some great books listed already, but I wanted to add this one I read to 2nd grade in the Spring. It's called Sylvia's Spinach by Katherine Pryor, and it's a cute story that is about a girl who hates spinach (even though she's never tried it). It goes over extremely well and we plant spinach seeds right after. Most of the kids are excited to try it for the first time, or do a great job of sharing how spinach is mild, sweet and easy to eat.

I would also add Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens, which talks about specific vegetables and how they grow, and what part of the plant they are. It's a great example of how we eat roots, stems and leaves or seeds. I used to use it for my roots lesson, now I usually read it with planting corn or potatoes. If you need any other book ideas, the NACL has some great lists of books and the lessons they incorporate, especially with specific crops or themes.
