How can DAEP campus gardens be designed or supported to meaningfully address food insecurity for our students and their families specifically when facing limited space, inconsistent/transient student attendance, and tight budgets?

This is the situation we face in our Dayton OH school.  We are beginning the installation of a food forest.  We also are repairing our hoophouse to make it more winter friendly for growing.  A grant provided a hydroponic tower for growing lettuce and we have started a salad bar in the cafeteria.  We collaborate with an inner city farm that gives the school excess produce that is then shared with families picking up their kids afterschool on Fridays.

Oooo... Janet, may I ask who funded the hydroponic tower? I am a grant writer for a nonprofit, and our youth program has been wanting to incorporate a tower. So I am always looking for new grant opportunities!

I will check it out and let you know...I wasn't involved with that grant.  It is a fantastic project.  Fifth graders were taught to plant and maintain, 3rd graders are the

harvesters and my first graders have made herbal vinegars and the salad dressing!  It creates excitement as it sits inside the main lobby for all the kids and parents to see it.
