USDA FARM TO SCHOOL GRANT

  • 1.  USDA FARM TO SCHOOL GRANT

    Posted 11-17-2022 02:32:00 PM
The USDA expects to award approximately $12 million to assist eligible entities in implementing farm to school programs that improve access to local foods, connect children with agriculture for better health, and inspire youth to consider careers in agriculture.

Has anyone on here been awarded this? Applied in the past? I am looking for some guidance and despite many email attempts, can't get hold of anyone at USDA.

I actually attended the live webinars two weeks ago and they were equally as frustrating. They spent an hour and 25 minutes reading a script of the various sections of the RFP. With five minutes left they answered questions, but not really. Even the questions they responded to in the chat were only answered by indicating which page of the RFP the answer could be found. They wouldn't take specific questions that were organization specific and the general questions were basically "see the RFP". I have never participated in a fed applicant workshop that was so unhelpful.  It felt like they were only doing it to check off a box saying they did it. Nevertheless, I have the links from both recordings. I'm happy to share if you feel it will be helpful.

Send the links and lets figure it out together.  We are teachers!  We can do this!  Let's spend the $12 Million and make our Schools amazing outdoor classrooms.

If you start the grant and share it through google docs, we can all learn together.  I have a high rate of winning grants.  Let's Do this!
    Happy ThanksGiving!
I'm grateful for this wonderful opportunity and all of you!  What a great community!

    Hi Mary,
I'm happy to share the links. Below is the email from USDA after the webinar. I actually have experience with fed grants, I was just frustrated by their lack of answers during the webinar. I'll be applying for the grant for my nonprofit. So I need to focus on that effort. Wishing you all tremendous success with your applications.

    Good Day!

Thank you for registering and attending the Farm to School webinars on Getting Familiar with Farm to School Program: An Overview and How to Apply and Developing and Writing a Successful Grant Application conducted on November 8th and 9th2022. The purpose of the webinars was to familiarize prospective applicants about the Farm to School Program and provide vital information concerning how to write a successful application. If you were unable to attend, the links below will take you to the webinar recordings. PDF copies of the slides are also attached.

Getting Familiar with the FY2023 Farm to School Grant: An Overview and How to Apply

Getting Your Grant Package Together: Developing and Writing a Successful Grant Application

The webinars are also posted to the Farm to School Applicant Resources page where you can access both recordings under "Webinars." Prospective applicants can also access the FY2023 application package at Grants.gov and receive updates on the Farm to School program by subscribing to the Dirt.

Please feel free to share this email with your partners and networks and let us know at SM.FN.FarmToSchool@usda.gov if you have any questions.

    Best regards,

    The Farm to School Team

Mary Ann, that's so generous of you and Latrina, thanks for sharing the links! I listened to the recording of the first one and found it completely unhelpful. Jean and I have been going back and forth and while very lovely, they have also not been helpful. USDA's policy is that they do not answer questions, it appears.
I am a grant writer so am very familiar with the process. What I couldn't tell definitively is if the  program needs to result in local food going to student in the district.
If not, I would like to apply to put a water source and irrigation system in for our Highs School's garden - the garden supports 2 classes - Greenhouse and Greenhouse management, and is used by several science classes as well. Produce from the garden is split between the culinary program at the HS, and a local nonprofit that gets fresh local food to area shelters, foodbanks, etc.
I was considering applying under the Turnkey Edible Gardens Track - if I can get quotes in time. (As of now I can't put together a budget because we have no idea what it will cost).
    Thoughts?

What kind of guidance do you need.  I have several schools who apply each year for Monarch pollinator/sensory gardens with veggies & herbs.

I write & review grants all the time.  Get started answering the questions & skip over the answers you don't know.  As long as you give me a few days to review, I'm happy to help you.  Just take one question at a time.  It gets easier each time you do a grant.  Also, I cut & paste each grant into a word document & save it.  Makes it easier to submit when I have it completed & I use the same answers on multiple grants.
    warmly,

    Hi all,

In case it's helpful, I chatted with the folks at USDA Farm to School, and they said they would encourage you to review the Frequently Asked Question document within the RFA materials

Also, if you reach out to
SM.FN.FarmToSchool@usda.gov and Jean Bingham (jean.bingham@usda.gov), they should be able to help or further direct questions to the right people.

    Hi Judit,

That is a state by state question. So, they can't really give you general guidance. This is the PDF that will tell you who you need to communicate with to find out:  https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/SPOC-4-13-20.pdf

My state is not listed - but does that make it so my answer is Program is not covered by E.O. 12372.?

It would seem that this is applicable to the program and not my state's participation in the review process.

@Judit DeStefano @Diana Techentien @Latrina Patrick @MaryAnne Rishebarger @Mia Jones and anyone else applying for a USDA Farm to School grant, would it be helpful if we hosted an informal Zoom meetup to get support from other members and tackle some of your application questions? We could try to have a mix of folks who have successfully applied before and first-time applicants. Let me know if this is something anyone is interested in and we could schedule a call as early as possible after Thanksgiving!

I would be available early mornings before 1pm and or late around 6pm to allow kids to settle down after school and family time. I think a 6-7 pm meeting would be a good time for everyone. Can someone pin a solid date and time for this to occur to its not lingering. There are a lot of parts and its a short time line January will be here before you know it. So if community networking is needed you will need to pin out time to handle all of it.

Here are the registration links for the two Zoom sessions. I'll also send these in an email to the Community early next week. Feel free to invite any colleagues if you personally cannot attend, want to have additional team members on the call, or know someone who could use support or has applied before and can help others!

Also flagging for everyone that we will likely do one or two peer support calls again this year for this grant and the folks at USDA have offered to do an informational webinar about the grant specific to a youth garden focus later this summer/fall!
